When Gladys Knight was still a teenager, she was one of the original members of the Pips, which consisted of her brother, her sister and two cousins. In 1962, the group recorded Every Beat of My Heart, which became a hit in the US. A short time later, the group changed its name to Gladys Knight and the Pips, which reflected her growing importance as a lead singer. After signing with Motown Records, the Pips recorded the smash hit I Heard It Through the Grapevine as well as The End of Our Road, If I Were Your Woman, I Don't Want to Do Wrong and more. The group switched to Buddah Records in 1973 and achieved its greatest sustained success with Midnight Train to Georgia, I've Got to Use My Imagination, Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me and On and On, all of which reached the top five on the US chart. Due to contract issues, Knight was forced to record two solo albums separately from the Pips, which led to the release of

. Over her prodigious career, Gladys Knight has received 22 Grammy Award nominations, out of which she won seven, including four as a solo artist. She has also won an NAACP Image Award, a Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award and an Essence Award for Career Achievement. In 2019, Gladys Knight sang the national anthem at Super Bowl LIII.
