'Gillian Welch is a singer and a songwriter. She partners artistically with guitarist David Rawlings. The music she performs and writes has distinct elements from Appalachian country music, Americana and bluegrass. She also collaborates with many musicians, has written music for movies and has seven albums of her music released since 1992 when she began performing.'

Gillian Welch was born to a mother who was still a freshman in college, so she put her up for adoption. Her adoptive parents are Mitzie Welch and Ken Welch - both musical and comic entertainers. When she moved to California with her new family at the age of three, her parents introduced her to the world of American folk music. She was particularly fond of performers like
Bob Dylan
, The Stanley Brothers and
Woody Guthrie
. She attended the Berklee College of Music where she specialized in songwriting. There, she met her future musical partner,
David Rawlings
, at a Berklee country audition. After finishing the tuition, she decided to move to Nashville, Tenn., and was soon followed by Rawlings. At a musical gig, the two discovered the successful blend of their voices and decided to stick together as a duo.

Beginning with her very first album,
The Revival
, the musical style of Welch and Rawlings is reminiscent of the music produced by rural folk singers from the Appalachian area during the Depression era. The duo with Rawlings consists of sparse performances of their two voices and guitar. They sing on all kinds of historical topics like the sinking of the Titanic and the life of Elvis Presley. Later, their instrumentation would include more violins, drums and electric bass. The Welch musical style also incorporates gospel, old-time music, rock and roll and punk rock.

The albums released by Welch are

,
O Brother, Where Art Thou
,
Time (The Revelator)
,
Soul Journey
,
The Friend of a Friend
,
The Harrow & The Harvest
and
Boots No 1: The Official Revival Bootleg
. The first four albums focus more on the sketchy style of music that is a revival of the old music country style. The
Soul Journey
is turned towards a sunnier disposition without the macabre emotions of the previous albums. The
Friend of a Friend
album is more focused on Rawling's singing voice, but Welch still sings the songs together with Rawling. Their last album was released in 2016 and has remixed songs from previous albums, demo versions of older songs and some original soundtracks.
