About Ghostface Killah

Tony Starks, better known as Ghostface Killah, is a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, the pioneering rap crew from the '90s. Even before he dropped his album debut, 1996's Ironman, he had made a considerable impact. Like all the Wu-Tang Clan members, this hip-hop artist used the crew to launch a career as a solo artist. In his own solo endeavors, Ghostface Killah was greatly supported by other Clan rappers and benefitted especially from the production help of RZA. Ghostface Killah's rapping had been featured on the 1993 Wu-Tang debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang. It was not until 1995, however, that he started to establish his own creative identity; he was featured on Wu compatriot Raekwon's album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Good reviews met Ghostface's performance here, as well as on his features on the Don't Be a Menace to South Central While You're Drinking Your Juice in the Hood and Sunset Park. All these guest spots on albums and soundtracks paved the way for the release of his solo debut, 1996's Ironman. Like all the Wu-Tang side projects, Ironman saw RZA behind the boards and found considerable success in the underground rap and hip-hop audience, which was quite large. Ironman was a number two hit on the mainstream charts when it was released. It was the first LP to arrive from RZA's Razor Sharp Records label, an imprint of Epic.

Working with the Clan and their diversity of members ensured that Ghostface Killah was busy until late in 1999, at which point he started releasing solo singles. He then dropped his second album early in 2000, titled Supreme Clientele. This was another success, but its follow-up Bulletproof Wallets in 2001 was a disappointment. It sold poorly, and Wu-Tang followers felt that Ghostface was going soft. Again, he refocused his efforts on the Wu-Tang Clan for a few more years. In the spring of 2003, Epic released the compilation album Shaolin's Finest. By year's end, Ghostface had released two new songs on mixtapes: the relatively radio-ready Missy Elliott collaboration Tush and the frenzied Jadakiss feature Run. These singles helped to build excitement around the release of the artist's first Def Jam outing and first with the simplified moniker of Ghostface. In the spring of 2004, he released The Pretty Toney Album. In 2006, FishScale followed up and made the Top 10. It was accompanied by More Fish. Around this time, he also released the album 718, the product of his project Theodore Unit.

The ever-prolific rapper released The Big Doe Rehab. Its scheduled release had initially overlapped with that of 8 Diagrams, the highly anticipated fifth Wu-Tang album. RZA then agreed to delay the release of the Clan's EP so it wouldn't compete with Ghostface's effort, which arrived in December of 2007. The following year, Ghostface was back with two compilation albums. GhostDeini the Great included career highlights, alternate recordings, and remixes, while The Wallabee Champ consisted of B-sides and rarities. Inspired by the R&B style and aware of the ladies in his audience, Ghostface released Ghostdini the Wizard of Poetry in 2009. It was markedly different from his earlier releases, but 2010's Apollo Kids was a more conventional album. This release featured guest spots from the Game, Busta Rhymes, and Redman. Early in 2013, Ghostface again took a new direction for Twelve Reasons to Die, which found him collaborating with film scorer Adrian Younge. It drew inspiration from the giallo genre, an Italian kind of movie that resembles slashers and murder mysteries. Twelve Reasons to Die was based on the concept of an alter ego for Ghostface. Next, he released 36 Seasons in 2014. This was a fairly straightforward release of gangsta rap. The Revelations produced most of the album, which also featured guest performers Pharoahe Monch, Kool G Rap, and AZ. In 2015, he collaborated with the Toronto jazz three-piece BadBadNotGood on Sour Soul. Also that year, he and Younge again joined forces for a sequel to their previous work. Twelve Reasons to Die II featured guest artists Raekwon, RZA, and Vince Staples.

Previous Hits

Ghostface Killah's hit tracks are Apollo Kids (1999), Cherchez LaGhost (2000), Never Be the Same Again (2001), Ghost Showers (2001), Push (2004), Be Easy (2005), and Back Like That (2006). His most successful albums are his solo debut Ironman (1996) and FishScale (2006), both of which made the Top Five of the Billboard 200.

Every solo project from members of the Wu-Tang Clan has a unique sound, and Ironman by Ghostface Killah is as distinctive as any. Although it features guest performances from almost every other Clan artist – most notably Cappadonna and Raekwon – Ironman bears resemblance to no other album in RZA's production discography, especially because its tone is so light. Still, there are hints of the Clan's trademark of metropolitan claustrophobia scattered throughout. Overall, the songs are mainly constructed over samples from '70s soul acts like the Delfonics and Al Green.

Whenever an established musician claims he is uninterested in contemporary music, a benign throwback to glory days (that is, a clichéd effort to recapture the spirit and magic of time-tested classics) tends to ensue. Seeing as how Ghostface expressed such a lack of interest after releasing two overly safe albums, FishScale seemed fated to be one of these releases. However, it's a lot more exciting than that.

Trivia

Ghostface Killah was RZA's roommate. After RZA founded the Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface assisted in the recruitment of seven more members.
