History:
Ghost the Musical features a book and lyrics by Bruce Joel Rubin, and music and lyrics by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard. The show is based upon the hit 1990 movie of the same name, and made its world premiere at the Manchester Opera House in Manchester in March 2011. The musical then kicked off its West End premiere on July 19, 2011. Finally, the show made its way to Broadway in April 2012, closing with a London production in October 2012. In 2013, the show toured all across the UK.
The musical tells the story of lovebirds Sam and Molly, who get attacked when they go home to their apartment. After Sam dies, he turns into a ghost. A psychic, Oda Mae Brown, leads Sam to get in touch with Molly in order to get her out of trouble and danger.
Ghost the Musical's 2011 world premiere in Manchester spawned a string of shows that began in March and ran through May. The production boasted direction by Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus, set and costume design by Rob Howell, choreography by Ashley Wallen, musical arrangements by Christopher Nightingale, illusions by Paul Kieve, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound design by Bobby Aitken, and projection design by Jon Driscoll. The cast featured Richard Fleeshman as Sam Wheat, Caissie Levy as Molly Jensen, Sharon D. Clarke as Oda Mae Brown, and Andrew Langtree as Carl Bruner.
When the show made its way to the West End, it started previewing at the Piccadilly Theatre in June 2011. That production opened on July 19, 2011 and ended on October 6, 2012, after 500 performances. When the musical transferred to Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, it began previewing on March 15, 2012, and had its official opening on April 23. The show's opening generated mixed reviews, but it managed to garner three Tony Award nominations. The production came to a close on August 18, 2012, after 136 performances.
The musical's first national tour of the UK premiered at the Cardiff Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on April 10, 2013, and attracted mostly rave reviews. The tour is scheduled to come to a close on March 8, 2014 in Oxford. The show's North American tour kicked off in Schenectady, NY at Proctors on September 14, 2013. In August 2013, it was announced that the cast would feature Steven Grant Douglas as Sam Wheat, Katie Postotnik as Molly Jensen, Carla R. Stewart as Oda Mae Brown, and Robby Haltiwanger as Carl Bruner. The production is scheduled to close on August 17, 2014.
The Italian tour of Ghost the Musical launched rehearsals in August 2013, leading to its first show at the Teatro Nazionale in Milan on October 10, 2013. After closing in Milan on December 31, 2013, the production will travel to Torino and Rome throughout 2014. The Italian show's original cast features Salvatore Palombi as Sam, Ilaria DeAngelis as Molly, Loretta Grace as Oda Mae Brown, and Cristian Ruiz as Carl. In South Korea, a show previewed on November 19, 2013 and opened on November 24. Productions in Melbourne, Australia and the Netherlands were scheduled to take place in 2012 and 2013, respectively, but had to be cancelled because of shorter than expected seasons in the UK and the US.
