Georgia Tech first fielded a football team in 1872 known as The Blacksmiths. Over the next century, the team name evolved to The Yellow Jackets, sometimes known as The Ramblin’ Wreck, and it amassed one of the most successful long-term records in college football. Early in the 1900s, famous coach John Heisman led the Yellow Jackets through 16 no-loss seasons, including five straight wins against arch-rivals the
Georgia Bulldogs
. Coach Bobby Dodd established a new record for wins against Georgia in the early 1950s, with an eight-game winning streak. The Jackets are four-time national champions and claim 16 conference titles. They were the first team to compete in all four major bowl games: the Rose Bowl, the
Orange Bowl
, the
Cotton Bowl Classic
and the
Sugar Bowl
. The Yellow Jackets have produced 50 All-Americans and sent more than 150 players to the NFL, including wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Support the Ramblin’ Wreck and get your Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football tickets at StubHub.
Georgia Tech plays home games in
Bobby Dodd Stadium
on Historic Grant Field in downtown Atlanta. The games are known for the enthusiastic participation of the student body. First-year students, known as RATs, sit in a special section of the stadium wearing yellow beanies and singing the “Ramblin’ Wreck” fight song. At the beginning of the game, the Jackets are escorted onto the field by the cheerleaders, a 1930 Ford Model A known as the “Ramblin' Wreck“ and “Buzz,” the Yellow Jackets' mascot. A steam whistle blows every time the team scores and at the end of every winning game.
The Georgia Tech Athletic Department hosts a tailgate party for all ticket holders on the top of the Peters Parking Deck at the north end of Bobby Dodd. The three-hour party features TVs and a lounge area overlooking Yellow Jacket Alley. Food and beverages are available for purchase.
In nearly 150 years of football, the Yellow Jackets have played in many memorable games, but there are a few that most fans love to remember. In 1916, John Heisman led the team to a 222-0 win over Cumberland College in the highest-scoring game in college football history. The Cumberland team had recently disbanded its football program and tried to cancel the game, but Heisman was seeking retribution for a recent basketball loss and insisted that Cumberland field a team. In 1976, freshman quarterback Gary Lanier led the Jackets to a 23-14 win over
Notre Dame
without throwing a single pass. The 1999 win against arch-rival Georgia ended with a second-chance overtime field goal by Luke Manget.
