Georgia Bulldogs History

With 19 different varsity sports and great reputations for many different men's and women's athletic teams, the Georgia Bulldogs don't tend to need much of an introduction. Over the years, the men's basketball team has had some memorable seasons that ended up with trips to the Big Dance, though the women's side of the court hasn't been too shabby either, heading all the way to the NCAA Tournament Final on two different occasions and sending many of their best players on to the WNBA. Not to be outdone, both the Bulldogs football and baseball teams have also seen plenty of success as well, showing that this is a program that can do a lot more than just dominate on the hardwood.

Founded all the way back in 1785, the University of Georgia has been a major staple of the Georgia area for a very long time, and that's not likely something to change anytime in the near future. Whenever the Bulldogs are digging in against a prominent foe, you can count on there being plenty of fanfare as fans participate in a tradition that has been passed down from one generation to the next for a very long time. When you're there participating in a long-standing tradition of big-time college athletics that continues to be one of the staples of the entire university, you'll definitely be glad that you're not still sitting anywhere else.

Different members of the Lady Bulldogs' basketball team have also gone on to play or coach on the pro level, and the football team has produced great players like A.J. Green, Mathew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, Herschel Walker, Jake Scott and many, many more.

But even though basketball and athletics in general are big deal around campus, this is also a university very well known for its academics as well. Well-known alumni include Kim Basinger, Ryan Seacrest, Crawford Long and Brooke Anderson make for just the tip of the iceberg, and there have been Bulldogs who have gone on to be major parts of their respective fields over the years. With plenty of great programs and a tradition of amazing student-athletes, University of Georgia is one of the top universities in the country and remains a hub for talented students who can bring it on the sports field as well as in the classroom.

Georgia Bulldogs Trivia

Did you know that Mathew Stafford was picked by the Detroit Lions with the first overall pick?

With an unbelievable arm, the tendency to make the big play at the right moment and a reputation for being both a hardwood and very sharp in terms of understanding offenses and defenses, Stafford was a fairly easy choice for the Detroit Lions, who snagged him with the top pick in the NFL draft in 2009. Since joining the Lions, Stafford has been prolific on the next level as well, as he became the fourth QB in NFL history to throw for 5,000 total yards in a season.
