The George Washington Colonials women's basketball team has an extensive history of winning championships. Between 1994 and 2016, the team won its conference regular-season championships 15 times. The team also won its conference tournament seven times, with the last win coming in 2018. With regard to NCAA Tournament play, the Colonials have made appearances 18 times, with six of those appearances being consecutive (2003-2008). The team also had a five-peat (1994-1998) and more than a couple of back-to-backers (1991-1992, 2000-2001, 2015-2016). The 2018-2019 season was a trying one for the Colonials as they posted a losing record. However, a few star players shined on the court, such as Mei-Lyn Bautista, who was a senior that season. She averaged 9.3 points per game and was named to the conference's All-Defensive Team as well as to the All-Conference Third Team. The George Washington Colonials women's basketball team plays its home games at the

. The University renovated the facility between 2008 and 2011, thanks, in part, to a $10 million donation from various donors.
The 2019-2020 season is Coach Rizzotti's fourth season leading the Colonials. During her first year coaching the team, she led them to a 20-win season, which was the team's 21st in its history. That year, the Colonials also won a piece of the Atlantic 10 Regular-Season Championship and appeared in its 23rd postseason tournament. Also during her first season, the Colonials were one of the top teams in terms of rebounds—they were the best in the conference in the number of rebounds they booked per game (42.6) and their number of offensive rebounds per game. Additionally, the team was No. 1 in steals overall and steals per game. Before joining up with the Colonials, Rizzotti was the head coach of the Hartford Hawks for 17 seasons. During her time there, the Hawks made six NCAA appearances (the only ones in its history) and won a couple of NCAA Tournament games. These accomplishments and others established her as the winningest coach of all time in the history of the American East. As a player, Rizzotti donned the
University of Connecticut
jersey and helped lead the Huskies to its first national championship in 1995.
Elisa Aguilar, Class of 2000, was a high-powered point guard and donned the Colonial jersey during two NCAA tournament teams. She was named the A-10 Rookie of the year thanks to her 17.2 points-per-game average. During one game, she managed to post 37 points, which tied her for third in the program's history. She also had a few other 30+-point games in both regular and tournament play. Aguilar is also the school's all-time free-thrower by percentage with a whopping .843 accuracy level. Tajama Abraham Ngongba, class of 2004, was a four-year letter winner. when she graduated, she took the all-time points record of 2,134 with her. She is currently the head coach at
Radford University
