'Hailing from Wilmington, Del., George Thorogood is an American singer, musician and songwriter. His music has been described as high-energy boogie-blues and became a staple on 1980s rock radio with I Drink Alone and Bad to the Bone. In the early 1970s, George Thorogood was a solo acoustic musician. However, he quickly formed a band with high school friend Jeff Simon, which was known as the Delaware Destroyers. The band developed its sound with a mix of rock and Chicago blues. In 1977, the band released its major record debut, and its success was an important key to the rise of Rounder Records. It wouldn't be until 1981 when the band saw their first mainstream exposure. Delaware Destroyers was the opening act for The Rolling Stones US tour and was also featured performers on
Saturday Night Live
. In addition, it gained notoriety for its 50/50 tour when the band performed for 50 days in 50 US states. In 1982, the band signed with EMI America Records. Bad to the Bone was released with the album getting gold certification by the RIAA. George Thorogood made appearances in films, television and commercials. Thorogood went on to having two more albums achieve certified gold status with
Maverick
and
Born to Be Bad.
During his career, Thorogood has released 20 albums, including two platinum-certified and six gold-certified records. In addition, he has sold over 15 million albums worldwide and continues to tour. In 2014, George Thorogood and his band celebrated their 40th anniversary.
