Every year, the Gator Bowl game is held in Jacksonville, Fla., and during this event, two college football teams play in the beginning of the winter for collegiate dominance. The Gator Bowl has been happening since 1946, making it the sixth oldest bowl game in college football history. Since it’s played in late December/early January, it’s a great event for football fans to watch during the holidays. Some of the all-time favorites who have played this event are Dan Marino, Chuck Long and Thurman Thomas. Fans of college football can experience football greats in the making at this event, so grab your Gator Bowl tickets at StubHub.
Over the years, the venue has changed a few times, but currently, the Gator Bowl, which is sponsored by TaxSlayer, has a seating capacity of 67,814. In the past, the event had seated as little as 7,600 attendees, but as the event became more popular, larger venues were needed.
The event currently happens at TIAA Bank Field, which is also home to the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. The Gator Bowl has been played here since 1996, and visitors can select from standard seating, 88 luxury seats and a super suite, which can be used for those looking to host game-watching parties at the field.
Since the event either happens in January or December, there have been times where there have been two in the same calendar year. Some examples of this include 1954 when Auburn played against Texas Tech in January and then played a winning game against Baylor that following December. Another example of this took place in 1960 when the January game featured Arkansas versus Georgia Tech and Florida versus Baylor in December.
Actually, since the bowl game became sponsored by TaxSlayer.com in 2014, the name has changed a few times. Back in 2015, the company actually renamed the event the TaxSlayer Bowl, but after the initial two-year period, the “Gator” was added back on, and now it's officially called the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl.
One of the best features of TIAA Bank Field is its tailgating-friendliness. The parking lot has plenty of space for fans in cars and trucks to bring out their grills and cook up some football-friendly meals. There are even spots in the lot for vehicles like fifth-wheel trailers and other forms of RVs, which are perfect for game-day tailgating.
When it comes to the Gator Bowl, one of the most famous games happened in 1978 when
Ohio State
played against
Clemson
. Not only did this game mark the end of the career of famous Ohio State coach Woody Hayes, but the game itself was a real nail-biter. This game also was the first for legendary Clemson coach Danny Ford. The game, which ended with a Clemson victory, was the first to showcase Ford’s skill on the field as a coach. This 1978 game was also famous for its turnout; in total, 72,011 fans packed the stadium.
