'The Gaither Vocal Band's background'

The Gaither Vocal Band got its start in an impromptu but rousing manner back in 1981 at a Bill Gaither Trio concert. Just before the show, Gaither was hanging out backstage with friends and fellow musicians Gary McSpadden, Lee Young and Steve Green. Harmonizing to Your First Day in Heaven, Gaither realized that there might be something there and invited the others to perform on stage with him that very night. The audience's reception said it all, and the musicians decided to make the collaboration a more permanent affair. Later that year, the group released its debut album, The New Gaither Vocal Band.

In the years since, the Gaither Vocal Band has released more than 30 albums, landing no fewer than 10 of them on the Billboard 200 chart, as well as scoring 15 Top 10 Christian Albums.

The Gaither Vocal Band has been honored with two Grammys. They won the first in 1991 for Homecoming, taking home the award for Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album. The vocal group returned nearly two decades later to win the same award for Lovin' Life in 2009.

In addition to these Grammy wins, the Gaither Vocal Band has won numerous recognitions at the genre's beloved Dove Awards. To date, the group has taken home an amazing 10 awards for Best Southern Gospel Album, six awards for Best Southern Gospel Song and one award for best Southern Gospel Performance.
