The Fort Myers Might Mussels have been the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the
Minnesota Twins
since 1993. While the franchise existed in some variation beginning in 1971, the current team dates back to 1992 when the Fort Myers Miracle was a co-op between multiple teams. The Twins provided 25 players, the Texas Ranger supplied seven, the Cleveland Indians sent five and the Florida Marlins and Kansas City Royals provided one each. That arrangement lasted for only one season, and the Twins became the sole parent organization of the team beginning in 1993. The Miracle made just one postseason appearance prior to the 2000 season. However, they have now been to the playoffs four times in the last seven seasons, including a Florida State League championship in 2014. The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels put up a 74-59 record in the 2019 season, but the Florida State League Championship Series was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma. It was announced in December 2019 that the team would start playing as the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels in the 2020 season. Grab your Fort Myers Mighty Mussels tickets at StubHub.
''Today's Minnesota Twins fans will recognize names like Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton, both of whom played in Fort Myers on their way to the big leagues. Fans who have followed the team longer can count players such as David Ortiz, Justin Morneau, Torii Hunter and Jacque Jones as Fort Myers alumni. Other stars who passed through Fort Myers on their way to the Twin Cities include Michael Cuddyer, Todd Walker and Corey Koskie.'
'Hammond Stadium is not only the home of the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, but it also hosts the Minnesota Twins Spring Training games during Grapefruit League play. The 7,500-seat stadium opened in 1991 but underwent major renovations in 2014 and 2015 that expanded the seating capacity to 9,300. There are plenty of different seating options in the stadium, from standard seats around the infield to grandstands that sit behind the center field wall. The stadium embraces the Mussels' long history with the Twins, as there are banners commemorating all the retired numbers from the Minnesota team on display around the stadium.'
'
2020 will see the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels square off against their divisional rival, the
Charlotte Stone Crabs.
The Stone Crabs, the Advanced-A affiliate of the
Tampa Bay Rays
, will play the Mighty Mussels 16 times over the course of the season.
''Not only does Fort Myers get a new team name in 2020, they are also getting a new manager. Aaron Sutton has been announced as the Mighty Mussels' manager for the 2020 season, replacing former skipper Toby Gardenhire, who was promoted to manage Triple-A Rochester. This is Sutton's first stint as a professional baseball manager. He spent the last four seasons as the head coach at Montana State University. He was named the 2019 GNAC manager of the year after he led the Montana State Yellowjackets to the league's regular season and postseason championships.'
