The Fordham Rams make up the football program at Fordham University in New York. The team played its first game in 1882. Back then, the game of football was played quite differently from the sport that fans know and love today, but Fordham was able to win its first bout against Seton Hall by scoring a single goal. The latter school dropped football from its roster of sports in 1982. At the turn of the century, the main rivals to Fordham were Catholic schools such as
Villanova
and
Georgetown
. During the 1920s, the Fordham Rams made major improvements to the team. Starting in 1929, the Rams maintained a winning streak of 14 straight seasons, playing games to huge crowds of more than 50,000 fans. The team kept up this level of success until the football program at Fordham took a break in 1942. Fordham placed in the top 20 during the first national poll. 'The Jack Coffey Field — often just Coffey Field — is the official home of the Fordham Rams and several other sports teams. Originally, the facility was opened for baseball games. It received a name change in 1954 in honor of the legendary Fordham athletic director and coach Jack Coffey. Some students in 1964 sponsored their own version of the Fordham football team and started using parts of the field for their games. The university admired the students' dedication and started construction on permanent grandstands for football. The field can hold approximately 7,000 sports fans.'

The
Holy Cross Crusaders
represent the biggest rival team for the Rams in the
Patriot League
. The teams play against each other annually for the honor of taking home the Ram–Crusader Cup. The rivalry was initiated in 1951, but it went on hiatus during the 1955–1989 football seasons. The series was created to honor Frank Cavanaugh, a coach who spent three seasons at Holy Cross and six at Fordham, influencing and improving both teams.

The story of the Rams' national title win is somewhat convoluted. The team ended the 1929 football season as holders of a national championship. However, according to a national poll conducted around that time,
Notre Dame
was the winner of the national title for that year. In addition to the poll, two math formulas used to rate college teams during this era also declared Notre Dame the winner. However, Fordham did win a small national title in 1968, returning the Rams to varsity football status the following year. Although the Rams has spent much of its existence as an independent team, it also won conference titles in 2002, 2007 and 2014.
''Joe Conlin started his first year as the head coach for the Fordham Rams in 2018. The team finished this season with a 2–9 record overall. It scored 2–4 for games in the Patriot League.'

Although the team plays as part of the

, the
