Christian pop duo For King and Country, stylized for KING & COUNTRY, first burst onto the scene in 2012 with the release of the debut album
Crave
. Remaining on the
Billboard
Top Christian Albums chart for 41 weeks,
Crave
peaked at No. 4 and quickly brought the duo popularity and success in the Christian market. For King and Country's sophomore album,
Run Wild. Live Free. Love Strong.
, was even more successful, peaking at No. 13 and No. 2 on the
Billboard
200 and
Billboard
Top Christian Albums charts, respectively. The album has since been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The duo's 2018 release,
Burn the Ships
, quickly climbed to the top of the
Billboard
Top Christian Albums chart; it features For King and Country's greatest hit yet, Joy, earning the duo a 2019 Grammy Awards nomination.
Australian-born Joel and Luke Smallbone have been immersed in the world of music for their entire lives. Moving to Nashville in 1991, Joel and Luke visited many rock concerts with their father, who worked as a music promoter. The siblings' older sister,
Rebecca St. James
, is a Christian music artist as well, launching her career when her brothers were young. Joel and Luke got a taste of playing music on the road as they worked on their sister's road crew. Deciding to form their own band, the brothers operated under the names Austoville and Joel & Luke until settling on the name For King and Country, inspired by the British warcry symbolizing the act of laying down one's life for something greater than oneself. The 2018 album
Burn the Ships
features heartfelt, honest lyrics drawn from the brothers' personal lives, supporting the album's theme of offering hope and encouragement to listeners.

. The duo has also won four GMA Dove Awards, including Contemporary Christian Artist of the Year in 2015 and 2016.
The four-year gap between the release of the duo's second and third albums was largely due to Joel and Luke working on
Priceless

Billboard
