Its title sponsor, Food City, has the distinction as NASCAR’s second longest-running sponsor and also lends its name to NASCAR’s Monster Energy Cup Series race, the Food City 500, held in April at Bristol. The Food City 300 runs on the Friday preceding the famous and often hotly contested night race at Bristol in the Monster Energy Cup Series. Starting in 2020, the Food City 300 and the aforementioned night race move from August to September. Jack Ingram took the first checkered flag in the Food City 300 on August 27, 1982. Who races in the Food City 300?

Don’t be surprised if you get to see some of the stars from the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series in the Food City 300 race. In 2020, NASCAR drivers with three or more years of Monster Energy Cup experience may run in up to five Xfinity races. In past years, those veterans could compete in seven Xfinity races but they had to have more than five years of experience. Kyle Busch, a Monster Energy Cup champion, has enjoyed considerable success at Bristol. In fact, he has twice completed the Bristol trifecta of winning the Truck Series, Xfinity and Monster Energy Cup Series races in the same weekend (2010 and 2017). In 2004, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., became the first driver to win both the Food City 250, as it was then called, and the Monster Energy Cup Series Night Race at Bristol.

How many drivers compete in the Food City 300 scheduled race?

Since 2012, NASCAR has reduced the fields in its Xfinity races. In 2012, each Xfinity stop featured 43 drivers. This is the same as the current number of competitors in the Monster Energy Cup Series races. NASCAR reduced Xfinity fields to 40 cars in 2013 and 38 for the 2019 campaign. In 2020, Xfinity races such as the Food City 300 will have 36 drivers.

At its infancy, the Food City 300 went by the name Pet Dairy 150. Since that first race, the lap numbers have increased to 200 and 250 before the current 300 laps.
