The Seminoles football team has a long and illustrious tradition that is synonymous with the war chant, the school hymns and the appearance of Osceola and Renegade before the game. The Seminoles briefly fielded a football team between 1902 and 1904 back when it was known as Florida State College, but it wasn’t until 1947 that the school established a permanent program. The team’s fortunes changed in 1976 with the arrival of head coach Bobby Bowden, who built the Seminoles into one of the premiere teams of college football. After the team finally shed its independent status in 1992 and joined the Atlantic Coast Conference, Florida State won the conference title every year between 1992 and 2000 and two national championships in 1993 and 1999. It was one of the most successful decades for any program in college football history. Following Bowden’s retirement after the 2009 season, Jimbo Fisher took over as head coach of the program and won another national championship in 2013. You can purchase your Florida State Seminoles tickets at StubHub and experience the tradition for yourself.
Florida State plays at the
Doak Campbell Stadium
, located on the school’s Tallahassee campus. Opened in 1950, it is named in honor of the university’s president between 1941 and 1957. After numerous renovations, the seating capacity rose from 15,000 to around 80,000 today. Both standard and premium seating options are available. Premium seating includes the Dunlap Champions Club and luxury suites.
Before every home game, fans can participate in the legacy walk in which you can line up and greet the team between Heritage Tower Fountain and the Doak entrance. Leading up to the start of the game, you can witness the school's greatest tradition in which a man dressed up as the Seminole leader Osceola rides out onto the field on an appaloosa horse named Renegade and plants his spear into the turf. Fans can also look forward to the music of the Marching Chiefs, the official band of Florida State University.
Tailgating is permitted in the immediate lots surrounding the stadium beginning around five hours before kickoff on the day of the game. Fans are expected to follow the university’s tailgating policies, which are listed on the back of the parking passes. The university encourages tailgaters to recycle their garbage in bins located throughout the lot.
Florida State shares its biggest rivalries with fellow state schools
Florida
and
Miami
. During the 1980s and 1990s, when all three schools were in perennial national championship contention, the rivalry was at its most intense. In 1991 and 1992, Florida State and Miami played two games known as Wide Right I and Wide Right II in which a kicker missed a field goal in the waning moments of the game. Though Florida and Florida State occupy different conferences, the teams have played each other every year since 1958. Florida State also shares minor rivalries with
Clemson
and
Virginia
. The winner of the Florida State and Virginia game receives the Jefferson-Eppes Trophy.
