In 2013, the Florida Gators won their first NCAA team title. Florida won two more team titles in the next two years. In the ultra-competitive SEC, Florida has finished in the top three every year since 2007. Hired in 2016, Head Coach Jenny Rowland has had her Gators ranked among the nation’s top four teams since taking the helm. Since 2016, the
NCAA Championships
have awarded the Gators with 40 All-American honors and seven NCAA event titles. The team takes on nationally-ranked conference foes the
LSU Tigers
and the
Alabama Crimson Tide
in the regular season. In 2019, Florida claimed the SEC regular-season crown and finished with a record of 55-12-0 for the season. NCAA Gator All-Americans for 2019, Trinity Thomas and Savannah Schoenherr, are returning for a new season. Nine Gator gymnasts have earned NCAA National Champion honors. Most recently, Alicia Boren was crowned champion for her floor routine in 2019. Alex McMurtry won three individual titles while at Florida. McMurtry received the vault title in 2018, and in 2017 was awarded for her uneven bars routine and received the NCAA All-Around title. The most decorated individual gymnast in recent history was Bridget Sloan. She received multiple titles in 2016, including NCAA All-Around, Bars and Beam. In 2014, she was crowned champion in the uneven bars, and in 2013 was the champion of the NCAA All-Around and balance beam.
Home meets for the Gators are held at the
Stephen C O’Connell Center
in Exactech Arena on the campus of the University of Florida. With attendance at home meets growing each year during Coach Rowland’s tenure, the average attendance for home meets in 2019 was 8,333. The largest crowd to attend a Florida gymnastics event was in 2008 when the Gators hosted Georgia in front of 10,855.
A February home meet for the Gators brought the Auburn Tigers to Gainesville for a battle of the two Southeastern Conference unbeaten gymnastics teams. Several outstanding performances led to a win for the Gators. Florida finished the meet with a team score of 197.85, which was the nation’s sixth-highest score for the season. Trinity Thomas received her third 9.975 score to equal the season-high record by a Gator freshman. The Florida crowd of 9,055 was the 2019 season-high and the ninth-highest crowd in Gator gymnastics history. The final score was 197.85-196.70, which extended Florida’s lead in the all-time series with Auburn to 77-11.
The Gator women won their 11th conference title, winning the regular season with a record of 6-1. Trinity Thomas earned eight 9.975 scores during the season, which leads Florida’s all-time record for freshmen. Thomas was named SEC Freshman of the Year and led the Gators for the season with 26 event titles, including SEC vault champion. Rachel Gowey, Alyssa Baumann and Megan Skaggs shared the 2019 SEC balance team title by each receiving a score of 9.95. Alicia Boren shared the 2019 NCAA floor exercise title, extending the streak to nine for a Florida gymnast to earn a national event title.
Alyssa Baumann (1 NCAA/2 WCGA Regular Season), Rachel Gowey (2 NCAA/1 WCGA Regular Season) and Amelia Hundley (2 NCAA/2WCGA Regular Season) have been named All-Americans in addition to Schoenherr and Thomas.
