The Fayetteville Woodpeckers are the Class-A Advanced affiliate for Major League Baseball's Houston Astros. The team was created through contraction as the
California League
and
Carolina League
decided to work together on realignment after the 2016 season. The realignment resulted in the California League contracting two teams, one of which was the Astros' affiliate. Both of those franchises moved to the Carolina League, and the wheels were set in motion for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers to be born. Fayetteville didn't have the stadium ready for the team in time for the 2017 season, so the franchise existed in 2017 and 2018 as the Buies Creek Astros while construction was completed. In their second season in Buies creek, the Astros put up the second-best record in the league at 8-57 and won the Carolina League Championship. The transition from Buies Creek to Fayetteville happened before the 2019 season. The franchise make it to the Carolina League Championship again, but they came up just short of a repeat championship. Opened in 2019, Segra Stadium is the home of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers. The Woodpeckers played their first home game in the brand-new stadium on April 18, 2019, and came up on the short end of a 7-5 contest with the
Carolina Mudcats.
The stadium does a lot to pay tribute to the military, as Fort Bragg is essentially located in the backyard of the stadium. The grassy berm in left field not only houses the bullpens, but it also has a child-sized baseball diamond so the youngsters can get involved too. Segra Stadium boasts a seating capacity of 5,000 between the traditional seating bowl and the berm area.

Geography is typically less of a factor in determining rivals when an entire league plays in the same region, as is the case with the Carolina League. However there are multiple layers that make games between the Fayetteville Woodpeckers and the
Down East Wood Ducks
face off. Not only do both teams play in the Southern Division, but their parent organizations are also rivals, as the Down East Wood Ducks are an affiliate of the Texas Rangers.
''Since the Fayetteville Woodpeckers are such a young franchise, they haven't put any alumni on Major League rosters as of yet. However, some of the top names in the Astros farm system are members of the Woodpeckers' roster. Seth Beer, Jake Adams, Jacob Meyers and Corey Julks are all potential future Astors who have already earned a spot in the Carolina League All-Star Game.'
'Nate Shaver is being given the opportunity to finish what he started in 2019 as he's been named the manager for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers for the 2020 season. During Shaver's first season at the helm of the Woodpeckers, the team saw 17 players move up to Double-A, won 72 games and made a trip to the Carolina League Championship Series. Shaver was an assistant coach with the team before the move to Fayetteville was completed, but he was chosen to take the reins of the new franchise. Before joining the Houston Astros' organization, Shaver served as a coach at Wake Technical Community College and New Mexico State University.'
