One of NCAA basketball’s premier early-season tournaments along with the Maui Invitational and NIT Season Tip-Off, the Emerald Coast Classic signals the start of the Division I college hoops season in earnest. The event will return to The Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Fla., Nov. 23-24, 2018. The eight-team tournament is headlined by top teams from across the country, including Baylor, Cincinnati, George Mason, Ole Miss, North Carolina Central, Nicholls State, Southern and Western Michigan. First- and second-round games will be played at on-campus sites, with the third-round and championship-round scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend. The 2017 Emerald Coast Classic saw Tennessee Tech run away with the title, clinching the trophy with a 90-60 win over Maryland Eastern Shore. The Golden Eagles were led by a career performance from guard Kajon Mack, as well as clutch showings off the bench by Shaq Calhoun and Cade Crosland. Mack knocked down a career-high six-of-seven attempts beyond the arc while tying his career-high of 24 points on 9-for-10 shooting from the field. Crosland buried two more threes in the second half on his way to career-best 12 points, while Calhoun finished with 15 points. Past Emerald Coast Classic champions include TCU, UVA and Iowa State.
The 74,500-square-foot state-of-the-art basketball arena opened in 2011 on the Niceville campus of Northwest Florida State College. It has hosted the Emerald Coast Classic in each of its first four seasons.
