The Eifman Ballet is the brainchild of philosopher-choreographer Boris Eifman. Founded in the late 1970s, Eifman Ballet specializes in the use of classical ballet technique and traditional sensibilities to stage contemporary ballet adaptations of the world's greatest literary works. Ballets like

Anna Karenina

,

Red Giselle

and

Russian Hamlet

fuse Eifman's zest for the old, the new and the poetic, establishing original ballet repertoires for modern Russia. The Eifman Ballet was formerly the Leningrad New Ballet. In 1991, the company changed its name to the St. Petersburg Eifman Ballet, corresponding to its namesake city. Since its early days, the Eifman Ballet has toured the United States extensively, playing at major venues like the

New York City Center

and the

Segerstrom Center for the Arts

. Like many international companies, the Eifman Ballet now boasts its own connected school, the Boris Eifman Dance Academy, founded in 2018. The school initiates eager children and would-be dancers into the tradition of the Russian ballet while preparing tomorrow's stars. 'Eifman Ballet: No Principals'

'The Eifman Ballet looks like many other ballet companies on the outside: It's a collection of talented, lithe dancers using their bodies to defy gravity and paint pictures. However, the company's actual structure differs in that there are no principals. There is no prima ballerina or danseur etoile. Instead, there are roughly 12 soloists who rotate as leads in the ever-changing repertoire. A corps de ballet that is at least 40 people strong rounds out the company's ranks, providing creative and interpretive support for the more lavish ballet productions of sweeping literary epics. Eifman, who is still the company's principal choreographer, divides up teaching and tutoring duties with about eight other esteemed colleagues, all seasoned grads of the Russian ballet world. A handful of leaders form the management team with Eifman serving as Acting Director. Eifman is a 2003 recipient of the French Order of Arts and Letters.'
