Eckhart Tolle, whose real name is Ulrich Leonard Tolle, was born in Lunen, Germany, in February of 1948. He had a troubled childhood as his parents fought often until they separated, leaving Tolle to live with his mother in post-war Germany. At the age of 13, Tolle moved to Spain with his father where he studied literature, astronomy and languages at home. When Eckhart Tolle was 19 years old, he moved to London where he began teaching German and Spanish. Unfortunately, depression overcame him, which ultimately led him to give up teaching. He later went to the University of London where he studied literature, philosophy and psychology. Tolle's battle with depression continued throughout his 20s until he was 29 years old and suffered a stint of severe depression that he discusses briefly at the beginning of his book
