Glenn Frey and Don Henley, who were both established musicians in their own right, were asked to play for Linda Ronstadt on her 1971 tour. When they told Ronstadt of their intention, she recommended Bernie Leadon to them, even arranging for him to play at her concert so that they could get to know him. They also brought Randy Meisner on board, with the foursome playing behind Ronstadt for a July concert that was held at Disneyland. In September of 1971, they were signed to Asylum Records as their own band.
