Formed in Chicago in 1994, Disturbed is known for its heavy metal riffs and searing vocals. Of the seven studio albums Disturbed has released, five have debuted at No. 1 on the

Hot 200 chart. The band is known for hits such as Down With the Sickness, Stricken, The Light and their amazing cover of Simon and Garfunkel's hit The Sound of Silence. They took a four-year hiatus beginning in 2011 to allow the band members to do various side projects, and then they came back together in 2015 as strong as ever. In total, Disturbed has been nominated for 30 different awards. They have won seven awards, including the 2007 Spike Guys' Choice Awards for Ballsiest Band, the 2015 Loudwire Music Awards for Video Countdown Hall of Fame and Classic Cage Match Hall of Fame, the 2016 Octane's Year-End Award for Artist of the Year and the 2017 Loudwire Music Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Video.

'Disturbed: Finding Their Voice'

While David Draiman's signature vocals are now the voice of Disturbed, the band began with a different vocalist, Erich Awalt, who had headlined for a band named Brawl that included Disturbed's future guitarist, drummer and bassist. Brawl recorded a demo tape with Awalt as their lead, but shortly thereafter, Awalt left the band. The other members of Brawl began advertising for a new vocalist. Draiman had been to 20 other auditions that month, but after seeing Brawl's ad in the

Illinois Entertainer

, a local music publication based in Chicago, Draiman decided to answer it. Of all the vocalists the band had auditioned, Draiman was the only one who showed up prepared with his own original music. The band was impressed by this and was even more impressed when Draiman began to sing. In 1996, the musicians hired Draiman on as their lead vocalist and changed the band's name to Disturbed.
