'One of the most respected singers of R&B, soul and gospel music, Dionne Warwick has won five Grammy Awards and an ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award, and boasts more than 60 Billboard Hot 100 hits. She is perhaps best known for her work with master songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David, including Walk On By and I Say a Little Prayer.'

Dionne Warwick was born in New Jersey in 1940 to a family with deep musical connections. Her mother was the manager of the gospel group the Drinkard Singers, which featured many of her family members, and her father was a record promoter. She studied at Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Conn., while also pursuing a career as a singer, performing with the likes of Ben E. King, Dinah Washington and The Drifters.
It was with The Drifters that Warwick was discovered by Bacharach, who was so impressed by her voice that he asked her to record some demos. In collaboration with Bacharach and lyricist David, Warwick began work on the songs that would go on to shape her career as a solo artist.
Warwick's rise to stardom didn't take long, and by the end of 1962, her first single Don't Make Me Over was a Top 40 pop hit and reached the Top 5 on the R&B chart. She was soon travelling the world. The following year she had another huge hit with Anyone Who Had a Heart, which sold over a million copies worldwide. In 1964, she released the single she became best known for internationally, Walk On By. This helped to make her the best selling female artist of the year.
Warwick's success only grew from there. She enjoyed further chart hits, including Alfie, I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself, and her first single to sell a million copies in the U.S. alone, I Say a Little Prayer.
When Bacharach and David ended their musical partnership in the early 70s, Warwick was left to forge her own path. This resulted in her first Billboard No. 1 single, Then Came You, another million seller, I'll Never Love This Way Again, and later her Bee Gees-penned hit, Heartbreaker.
''Dionne Warwick fans might also the music of some of her most famous collaborators, among them Elton John and Patti LaBelle.'
