History

The roots of American football can be traced to a sport known as rugby football, which served as a kind of foundation for the sport that has developed into the modern game of football over the years. The first game of American football was played in 1869, but it did not resemble the game football fans of today know. The game began to evolve over time and became a collegiate sport first. The pro game really took off with the invention of The National Football League in 1920. The league matured and grew as the years went by, but really took itself to the next level when it merged with the competing American Football League in 1970. The league then split into two conferences that remain to this day, the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. The NFL has continued to add teams over the years and now boast 32 franchise in cities all over the United States of America. The NFL is the most popular sports league in the United States and its championship game, The Super Bowl, is one of the most watched games in the world. As for the collegiate level, college football remains immensely popular throughout the entire United States.
