Getting to Des Moines Civic Center events is very easy whether you are coming east or west. If you are traveling on I-235 West, get off at 3rd Street, and the Des Moines Civic Center will be just a few blocks down. If you are traveling on I-235 East, get off at 5th Avenue/3rd Street, and the center will be a few blocks ahead.
If you would like to self-park, there are plenty of meters located around the center. If you would like to valet instead, most Des Moines Civic Center performances have that option available beginning an hour before the start of showtime. You could either pay for your valet the day of your event, or you can purchase it in advance online. There is also a parking garage located on 4th Street and Grand Avenue as well as one located on 3rd Street and Court that allows access to the civic center via the Skywalk. All of the above parking options have fees, but there is free parking available in the lot between 10th Street and 9th Street near Locust Street. Parking here is free after 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday as well as on the weekends.
Yes, the center has wheelchairs available for people who have mobility challenges, listening devices for the hearing impaired, elevators, Braille for the blind and large print for those with weakened vision. For starters, there is a musical theatre camp for children between the 3rd and 8th grade. Children in this camp get to learn all about productions as well as how to work together as a team while building their character and confidence. Other classes are the Broadway Summer Intensive, Broadway Academy, Mission Improvisation and Master Classes.
