'The Denver Pioneers play in the always exciting Summit League, which features a number of excellent mid-major programs. Anything can happen in Summit League basketball as any college in the league can make a conference tournament run. Although the Denver Pioneers have not yet broken through to a conference title, Coach Rodney Billups is in the process of building a program to get the school there. The Pioneers have come close to making the NCAA Tournament, but the school is still fighting for its first ticket to the Big Dance. Currently, the Denver Pioneers are a young team with only one senior on the roster and nearly every player is a freshman or sophomore. This means that Billups will have an experienced team in the near future that is ready to take Pioneers basketball to a new level. You can be a part of this when you grab your Denver Pioneers' basketball tickets at StubHub today.'
'For much of their existence in Division I, the Pioneers have been conference nomads. The team started briefly as an Independent before moving to the Sun Belt Conference. However, travel costs were a difficulty for the school's budget, and the Pioneers then briefly played in the Western Athletic Conference for one year. After that single season, the Pioneers switched to the Summit League, where they have played since the 2013 season.'
'Denver has never made reached the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers had their best chance when they were in the WAC but were upset as the second seed in the conference tournament. The Pioneers have qualified for several other postseason tournaments. In 2013, Denver made the National Invitation Tournament and reached the second round before losing to Maryland. The Pioneers made several appearances in the NCAA Division II basketball tournament during their time in D2.'
'The Pioneers play in Magness Arena. This arena was built in 1997 and seats up to 8,000 for basketball. The fans come out in numbers when the Pioneers are playing winning basketball, and it feeds into Denver's home court advantage.'
'Royce O'Neill played two seasons for the University of Denver in 2012. He was an All-WAC player before transferring. Now, he plays in the NBA for the Utah Jazz and is a valuable bench player on the team. In the early days of the program, Byron Beck was a standout player who ended up on the Denver Rockets of the American Basketball Association, which later became the Denver Nuggets when the team joined the NBA.'
'
The two teams that the Pioneers have played against the most often are the University of Wyoming and
Colorado State University
. Denver plays against Wyoming annually and the two schools will rotate hosting. Denver has a 31-53 record overall against Wyoming although, as an underdog, Denver will usually play the Cowboys close. The Pioneers will also play against other Colorado schools such as Northern Colorado and the Air Force Academy. The closest school to Denver in the Summit League is Omaha.
