Head Coach: Connor Johnson
Location for Games: 76ers Fieldhouse in Wilmington, Del.
The G League is the NBA’s developmental program, aka minor league, and the Delaware Blue Coats is the team that’s affiliated with the Philadelphia 76ers. They play in the Eastern Conference of the G League. At one time, the name for this improvement program was the D League, but that was changed when Gatorade became a sponsor at the beginning of the 2018-19 season. That same year, the Delaware team rebranded itself, getting rid of its former moniker, Delaware 87ers. The team took the new name of the Delaware Blue Coats, and the members now play in a new, $26 million, 140,000-square-foot facility that seats approximately 2,500 people. Their 12-man roster includes three guards, one forward, two guard-forwards and one forward-guard. The league has a 50-game season lasting from early November to late March, not including playoffs. Connor Johnson assumed his position on June 18, 2019. He was first hired by Brett Brown, head coach of the 76ers, in 2014. In 2017, he became Director of Player Development and Coaching Development for the 76ers.
Marial Shayok, a native of Ottawa, was selected by the G League coaches and general managers for the 2019-20 Eastern Conference Midseason All-NBA G League Team. Shayok is 6 feet, 5 inches tall with a 7-foot wingspan. Another leading player is Norvel Pelle. He led the G League in the 2018-19 season with a 70.3 field goal percentage, and he ranked second in blocked shots. In two seasons with the Blue Coats, he has been in 43 games, averaging 11.6 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 22.8 minutes per game.
Both Shayok and Pelle were given two-way contracts, which allows them to play up to 45 days with the
76ers
while still playing most of their games in the G League.
At the start of the 2018-19 season, 40% of the athletes in the NBA had some G League experience. Some players are sent to the G League because their play at the pro level needs tweaking. One such player was Rashad Vaughn, who had some playing time with at least one team, the Milwaukee Bucks, before joining the team. At these games, whether a player aspires to the NBA or whether he’s there because of a decision by the front office, you will see athletes who are playing to make an impression. Among the G League teams that play against the Blue Coats are the Windy City Bulls (Chicago Bulls), Lakeland Magic (Orlando Magic), Long Island Nets (New York Nets), Westchester Knicks (New York Knicks), Raptors (Toronto Raptors) and the Maine Red Claws (Boston Celtics).
In a winning effort against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (Indiana Pacers), the Blue Coats scored 140 points, and seven of their players were in the double digits. Among them were Matt Farrell, who tied for most points with 26, and Rashad Vaughn, who notched 26 points too while also adding three rebounds and six assists. Justin Patton had 20 points and four rebounds.
Like the NBA, games consist of four 12-minute quarters, and the shot clock is 24 seconds. However, overtime is two minutes rather than five. The NBA uses the G League to test rule changes it’s considering. The coach’s challenge allows coaches to challenge one of the following rulings once during a game: a foul, a call about goaltending or basket interference or a tentative determination of an out-of-bounds ball.
