Deftones background

Three of the band's original members – Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham and Chino Moreno – were friends in high school. With each member expressing their own style and love for music, they decided to start a band, adding Chi Cheng to the group in 1990.

They released their first four-track demo that year, generating a cult following. Two years later, they were performing alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Korn. They soon caught the attention of a recruiter from one of the most popular metal labels in the field, Maverick Records. Working with Maverick Records throughout their career, the band has released eight studio albums.

Additionally, Deftones has won two coveted awards, including a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for their single “Elite,” and a Revolver’s Golden Gods Award for Album of the Year for 2013’s Koi No Yokan.

Since Cheng’s tragic death in 2013, the group’s lineup now also features Frank Delgado and Sergio Vega.

Their first album, Adrenaline, dropped in 1995, 13 years after they formed. Well received, it sold more than 200,000 copies, eventually achieving gold status. With the hype from Adrenaline, their second album Around the Fur (1997) almost immediately went platinum. Due to their newfound popularity, Deftones performed at Warped Tour and had multiple Billboard hits.

One of their most popular albums, White Pony, derived inspirations from bands such as Tool and Nine Inch Nails. Named one of the best albums of 2001, it earned them a Grammy. Their 2003 self-titled album Deftones reached No. 1 on numerous Billboard charts.

Their 2016 album Gore has topped charts in Germany, America, New Zealand, Australia and more. Some say it is their best album since the 2003 self-titled release.
