'Mayer Reinvigorates the Band'

'John Mayer discovered the Dead's music several years ago while filling in as the guest host on CBS's The Late Show. Weir was his guest, which got Mayer listening to the band's music. The two played Brown Eyed Woman together on television, and a partnership was born. Mayer taught himself how to play the Dead's entire catalog of music. As the frontman for the band, he has lent his style and distinct vocals to the timeless music.'

'Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh is in semi-retirement, so he did not join Dead and Company. He has been replaced by Oteil Burbridge, who was the bassist in the Allman Brothers. The last keyboardist from the Grateful Dead, Vince Welnick, is no longer alive. He has been replaced by Jeff Chimenti, who has played engagements with Weir and Lesh for years. The new and the old mix together to give Dead and Company an energetic sound.'

'What time of year do Dead and Company tour?'

'The band will usually play a fall tour, which is followed by a summer tour. Of course, the tours are more limited than the permanent tour that the Grateful Dead was on, but fans can usually expect 40-50 shows each year from Dead and Company. Weir and Mayer have solo projects of their own to which they devote much of their time.'

'For the summer shows that are played at outdoor venues, there is an active parking lot scene before the shows. Fans camp out for hours before the show, playing the band's music in the parking lot and buying various Dead and Company merchandise. There is a camaraderie among the band's fans as the music and the shared experience of being devoted followers of the band unifies them even though the fans are now a wide variety of ages. It is not uncommon to see 20,000 fans dancing frantically for nearly three hours at a Dead and Company show.'
