Nicknamed the World Cup of Tennis, the Davis Cup brings together some of the best players in the world to represent their countries in an annual team-based competition. The inaugural Davis Cup was held in 1900 at Boston’s Longwood Cricket Club as a competition between the United States and Great Britain. Played almost every single year since (with the exception of the two world wars), the Davis Cup slowly expanded to encompass teams from Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the world. The format for the tournament has gone through many different permutations throughout its history. The modern format was only adopted in 1981. Given its long history in the Davis Cup, it’s no surprise that the United States leads the all-time competition with 32 total titles. Australia is a close second with 28. France and the UK are tied for third place with 10 titles each. If you want to catch this exciting team-based competition, you can purchase Davis Cup tickets at StubHub.
The Davis Cup involves more than 100 countries, each one divided into distinct groups. The top 18 teams compete each year in the highest tier. These include 12 qualifiers from earlier stages, the four semifinalists from the previous year and two wild cards. The remaining teams are placed into three regional zones: the Americas, Europe/Africa and Asia/Oceania. Teams can be promoted or demoted from the top echelons based on their performances in the World Group stages. The final Davis Cup tournament consists of six groups of three teams each. These teams play against each other in round-robin matches. The top teams from each group plus two second-place teams with the best record advance to the quarterfinals. From this point forward, the losing team is eliminated from the tournament until a champion is crowned. Each round is a best-of-three.
The 2020 Davis Cup will take place between November 23rd and 29th at
La Caja Magica
in Madrid, Spain. Located in the Manzanares Park, the venue has three different hard court stadiums ranging between 2,500 to 12,500 in capacity. However, there are several important dates leading up to the final tournament. The Davis Cup qualifiers (as well as playoff rounds) will take place on March 6th and 7th. The 24-team qualifier determines which 12 teams advance to the actual Davis Cup, while the playoffs give the remaining teams a chance to compete for a higher tier. This will be followed by the start of regional group play on June 8th. More World Group rounds will commence between September 18th and 20th to determine who will reach the Davis Cup qualifiers and who will be forced into the playoffs for the next year.
In the 2019 Davis Cup Finals, which was also held in Madrid, Spain triumphed over Canada 2-0. The Spanish team consisted of Rafael Nadal, Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta, Feliciano Lopez, Marcel Granollers and, as captain, Sergi Bruguera.
The Davis Cup is one of the few tournaments that brings together the top country-based teams for a single event. That makes it unique in the tennis season. The Davis Cup otherwise adheres to most of the same rules and regulations of a standard tennis tournament. Before the 2019 reorganization, the Davis Cup Finals tended to take place across multiple venues all around the world. Beginning in 2019, however, the entire final tournament takes place in a single neutral location, giving attendees an opportunity to catch all of the action. Special events and activities take place all throughout the week of the tournament, as well.
