''The Wildcats football team represents Davidson College, a school located in North Carolina. The team was organized in 1897, but the first intercollegiate game wasn't played until the fall of 1898. That matchup was with the University of North Carolina, and a train was chartered to take the student body to nearby Charlotte to cheer on their athletes. The program continued to grow, and in 1906, the team was the first in the South to ever complete a forward pass after the rules changed to allow this now-common occurrence. Davidson jumped around between divisions through the 1900s. The program went through tough times in the 1980s and moved down to Division III in 1990. In 1993, the team went back into Division I-AA as an independent. Davidson joined the Pioneer Football League in 2001. 'The 2019 season starts out with three home games against Georgetown, Virginia Lynchburg and West Virginia Wesleyan. The team then travels to Campbell and Morehead State. Later in October, the Wildcats take on San Diego at home, visit Jacksonville and host Marist for Homecoming weekend. In November, there are home games against Valparaiso and Drake as well as away games versus Butler and Stetson.'
'The team plays its home games at Richardson Stadium. It has a capacity of 6,000 with all the seats being on the same side of the field. The stadium first opened in 1923 and was last renovated in 2005 to include a press box and other amenities. Students make up a big section of the fans, and it's always fun to join in with them as they show their support for the players.'
'Scott Abell leads the Wildcats football team, and he has held this position since 2018. In his first season, he led the program to its first winning record in over 10 years. One of the notable games was a 91-61 victory over Guilford. Abell came to Davidson from Washington & Lee University where his team won three conference championships. He was most recently the head coach at Washington & Lee University after working for several years as an offensive coordinator. He played football and baseball in high school, and he continued his baseball career in college at Longwood and for two years in the minor leagues after graduating.'
'To extend the festivities of game day to include pre-game fun, check out the tailgating scene at Davidson. Tailgating is allowed in several lots around campus, and for several hours prior to games, ticket holders can be found enjoying each other's company as well as food and drinks. The school hosts a Tailgate on the Turf event to anyone interested in joining a more organized activity where other people take care of the preparations and music.'
'The Davidson Wildcats football team has played in only one bowl over its long history. In 1969, the team, led by Coach Homer Smith, went to the Tangerine Bowl and faced Toledo. Unfortunately, the Wildcats lost 33-56. This ended the season in which the team was named a Southern Conference champion for the first time.'
'
In 2018, the team did well, especially in comparison to other years. The Wildcats won games over Brevard, Guilford,
Valparaiso
,
Butler
, Chowan and Jacksonville. This gave the team a record of 6-5.
