The CMA Music Festival was created in 1972. Over the years, as the event has grown, the festival changed locations throughout Nashville, Tenn. to accommodate parking, camping and the many activities and attractions the show puts on each year. 2001 brought the largest changes to the event as it switched its name from Fan Fair to the CMA Music Festival. During this time, performances started being held throughout the weekend rather than during the week, and the location was changed from its longtime home at the
Tenneessee State Fairgrounds
to various venues in downtown Nashville. The event's former location, the Tennessee State Fairgrounds, was then converted to temporary camping space to accommodate the large volume of attendees.

CMA Music Festival is known for providing a unique country music experience to its fans in a way that they will remember for a lifetime. At one event, singer
Kathy Mattea
was on doctor's orders to refrain from speaking to allow her injured vocal cords to heal. Rather than disappoint her awaiting fans, Mattea held a full meet and greet session with all of her fans using a computer to speak to them. Several performers have met their future spouses at the CMA Fest, including
Shania Twain
, who met her future husband, producer Mutt Lange, at the festival in 1993. In 1996, country singer
Garth Brooks
decided at the last minute to attend the 25th anniversary of the CMA Music Fest. Brooks was so overwhelmed with fans that he remained in his booth signing autographs for a total 23 hours and 10 minutes without one single break.
