Cirque du Soleil - OVO
Cirque du Soleil’s OVO is a breath-taking insect-themed traveling acrobatic circus. Written, directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker, a dancer, found inspiration from the world of insects, their movement in particular. She suggests that that movement “permeates the entire show.” During the OVO performance, the insect “creatures” fly, leap, bound and crawl about the stage to music composed by Berna Ceppas. Performers capture the essence so well that audiences are drawn into the hidden world filled with life that surrounds us – but of which we are usually unaware. This must-see event is infused with Brazilian rhythms and textures. The production premiered in Montreal, Canada in 2009 and is one of the largest and most ambitious flying acts ever undertaken by Cirque du Soleil.
Brazilian-born Colker played piano and volleyball in her youth until Graciela Figueroa, an Uruguayan dancer, introduced her to contemporary dance. Figueroa led a troupe called Coringa, which was famous in the 1980’s in Rio de Janeiro, Colker’s hometown. In the mid-eighties, she joined the Brazilian theater with the title of “director of movement,” a position created just for Colker.
In 1994, she created her own dance company, the “Companhia de Danca Deborah Colker.” The company quickly became internationally famous, performing around the world in some of the most prestigious venues. Other ballet and dance companies perform some of the original pieces from the company’s repertoire.
Founded near Montreal, Canada, in the early 1980’s, Cirque du Soleil grew out of a group of street performers who wanted to entertain. An idea of presenting a kind of circus, sans animals, began to form. With wild acrobatics, outrageous costumes, magical lighting and original music, they called it Cirque du Soleil or Circus of the Sun because the “sun symbolizes youth, energy and strength.”
Home to the Jacksonville Sharks, the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena is a multi-use venue located in Florida’s largest and most populace city. The large arena opened in 2003 and stages concerts, arena shows and graduation ceremonies as part of their regular schedule.
