Crystal
is an exciting foray onto the ice for
Cirque du Soleil
. Cirque du Soleil is known for its extravagantly choreographed acrobatic shows that are recreations of circus-style shows. Unlike a traditional circus under the big top, these shows take place inside on a stage.
Crystal
is the first Cirque du Soleil production to venture into new territory with a show that combines aerial stunts and other acrobatics with ice skating. Crystal, the protagonist, runs from her family and friends who do not understand her and ends up falling through the ice on a frozen pond. She finds herself in a magical underwater world where she meets a reflection of herself. This other self gives Crystal a pen that she uses to express her true voice with re-imagined episodes from her past. She eventually harnesses her creative powers and is able to express her true self. Cirque du Soleil was founded in the 1980s by Gilles Ste-Croix as a unique show with a varied mix of fire breathers, dancers, jugglers and musicians. In 1987, Cirque du Soleil toured the US for the first time with a show that combined set designs, seating on all sides and audience interaction in an innovative interpretation of the circus. Today, Cirque du Soleil has several shows that tour all over the world, and the shows are known for their seemingly impossible stunts and interwoven stories.
Crystal
expounds on this format with new staging, new ice skating elements and new music styles. Unlike previous shows, which usually feature made-up languages in speech and instrumental music,
Crystal
has music from popular artists like Beyoncé, Sia and U2 that is performed by Quebec artists.

Crystal
is different from previous Cirque du Soleil shows in that it takes place on and above an ice rink stage. There are other new features, too, such as the inclusion of popular music, some of which is pre-recorded, and some of which is live. While you are at the show, you will get to participate in a bit of pre-show fun and games that involves plenty of snowballs. The sets are blue and white ice castles with inner rooms and outer skating ramps. Stainless steel trees, the sound of rushing wind and a warming fire set the stage. Animated projections shine color in motion on the ice floor. The ice skating is not just skating around in circles but involves skateboarding-style stunts on sloping ramps disguised with synthetic ice. There are even digitalized projections of colored trails that follow the skaters' movements on the ice.
