Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella background

The songwriting team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein usually composed musicals for Broadway. Cinderella was their one exception; this musical was developed for television, and the first version, which starred Julie Andrews, premiered on CBS in 1957. It was a huge hit for CBS, and the success of the first televised Cinderella led to two more TV productions. First, the 1965 version featuring Lesley Ann Warren as the title character, and second, the 1997 production, which starred Brandy Norwood, Whitney Houston, Bernadette Peters and Whoopi Goldberg. While the musical was performed on stage after the television version aired, it didn’t officially debut on Broadway until 2013. The Broadway production, which starred Laura Osnes as Cinderella and Santino Fontana as the prince, updated the musical for modern sensibilities.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella hits

Because Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella has been a television staple for decades, the show boasts some of the songwriting duo’s most recognizable songs. There’s the winsome “In My Own Little Corner,” in which Cinderella imagines a life outside the confines of her stepmother's house, and “Impossible; It’s Possible,” in which Cinderella’s fairy godmother helps her prepare for the ball. “Ten Minutes Ago,” is a classic love ballad, and “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” becomes the show’s romantic refrain.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella awards

Over the years, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella has been nominated for numerous awards. The 1957 version starring Julie Andrews was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, and the 1997 version was nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards. When the musical finally made it to Broadway in 2013, the show garnered nine Tony Award nominations and took home the prize for Best Costume Design.
