The Cincinnati Bearcats have had several coaches worthy of mention over the past few decades. Sid Gillman was coach to the Bearcats in 1949 and led the team to winning three American Conference Championships and two Bowl Games in six seasons. He later left to begin his career as a pro coach for the NFL team, the Los Angeles Rams. Brian Kelly, coach from 2006-2009, led the team toward becoming the No.3 team in BSC Standings. He later left the team in a controversial split to serve as coach for the
Notre Dame
in 2010. Butch Jones was also once head coach when the team earned its win in a Big East Championship and again with its
Liberty Bowl
win in 2011.
There are many notable players that currently hail as Cincinnati Bearcat alumni. Brig Owens starred as the quarterback, half-back, and punter for the university until he was drafted by the NFL in 1965 by the
Dallas Cowboys
. He later went on to become associate executive director in the Player’s Association and subsequently for the NFL. Greg Cook is another notable team player. Though his football career was short-lived due to injury, he had great potential, especially considering his average of over 9 yards per pass attempt and 15 touchdown passes. Trent Cole also hails from the University of Cincinnati and was drafted by the
Philadelphia Eagles
in 2005. Since then, he has been selected as a two-time Pro Bowl recipient and has earned one All-Pro designation in 2009.
One of the oldest rivalries in the NCAA Division I Football Program is the ongoing feud between the
Miami Redhawks
and Cincinnati Bearcats. The two teams first squared off in 1888, marking the game as the first-ever college football game played in the state of Ohio.
