. The Fire's players have worked hard to live up to the team's name ever since their first game in 1998, with the level of play increasing with each subsequent season. Competing against numerous Major League Soccer teams like FC Dallas in the Brimstone Cup and the New England Revolution in numerous playoff games, the Chicago Fire is consistently one of the best performing teams in the league. With both the team and individual players earning many awards for performance and sportsmanship, Chicago Fire games are an engaging experience for anyone who has a great appreciation for the sport of soccer. The Chicago Fire Soccer Club (the team's full name at inception) was established on Oct. 8, 1997, a date that was significant for being exactly 126 years after the Great Chicago Fire for which the team was named. As a result of announcing its creation in the fall, the team did not begin its inaugural season until early 1998.
The Chicago Fire have had numerous rivals over their more than two decades of history. Part of this is due to the team's move from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference in 2002. Two of the team's earliest rivals were FC Dallas and, to a lesser extent, the Los Angeles Galaxy, both having strong showings against the team in the Brimstone Cup and the playoffs, respectively. After 2002, D.C. United and the New England Revolution emerged as top contenders, especially the latter. The rivalry with the Revolution frequently carried on all the way to battling each other in the playoffs.
The Chicago Fire's current head coach is Raphaël Wicky, appointed in December 2019. A Swiss native, Wicky brought with him 27 years of experience as a player and coach in the United States, Switzerland, Germany and Spain. Before joining the Fire, he had coached the US U-17 Men’s National Team, which he helped to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Previously, the Chicago Fire were led by Veljko Paunović, who had coached Serbia’s U-20 team after a 16-year playing career that included one season in the MLS.
The year 2019 was a bit of a rocky season for the Chicago Fire. The team placed eighth in the Eastern Conference overall. Of the 34 games, both home and away, that the team played, they managed to win 10, lose 12 and tie 12, scoring a total of 42 points overall.

Tailgating is allowed at various places around Soldier Field. These include the top level of the Waldron Deck and all the surface lots, though tailgating activities cannot exceed one parking space per vehicle. It's recommended that you arrive several hours early if you intend to tailgate, as the top level fills quickly and opens around four hours ahead of a game and closes two hours after one ends. Nearby tailgating options offer more freedom, as the Adler Planetarium Lot has amenities ranging from extra space to porta-lets.
