'Chattanooga played its first men's basketball game in 1915 under coach John Spiegel. Coach Tommy Bartlett brought the Mocs to prominence with a 1961 appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Ron Shumate coached the team to continued Division II dominance from 1972 until the team moved to Division I in 1978. Mack McCarthy, coach from 1985-1997, led the Chattanooga Mocs to eight regular-season Southern Conference titles and five NCAA appearances. The Mocs last Conference Title and NCAA appearance was during Matt McCall’s 2015-2017 era. While playing in Division II of the NCAA, the Chattanooga Mocs won one national championship and appeared in five Division II Tournaments. The team played four times in the National Invitation Tournament in the 1980s. In Division I play, the Mocs have appeared 11 times in the NCAA Tournament, making it as far as the Sweet Sixteen in 1997. Chattanooga is an eleven-time winner of the Southern Conference Tournament Championship, and five Mocs have been named as a Southern Conference Player of the Year. 'Junior guard David Jean-Baptiste is the current hot scorer on the Chattanooga Mocs, continually putting up double figures.
