Since 2014, the Charlotte Knights have wowed baseball fans at BB&T Ballpark with the tall buildings of uptown Charlotte as a backdrop. From 1990 to 2013, the Knights called nearby Fort Mill, South Carolina, home. During that tenure just outside of Charlotte, the Knights won two International League titles (1993 and 1999), and the team transitioned from Double-A to its current status as a Triple-A minor league franchise. The 1993 International League crown came in the Knights’ first season as a Triple-A squad. When you follow the Charlotte Knights, you stand a chance of witnessing the future of their MLB affiliate, the
Chicago White Sox
. Brian Anderson came to Charlotte in 2005 as the 15th overall pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. He earned International League Player of the Week honors for the week of July 17, 2005. Get your Charlotte Knights tickets at StubHub to see tomorrow’s major league baseball stars.
The skipper for the 2020 Charlotte Knights is quite familiar with Charlotte and Major League Baseball. Wes Helms is a native of Gastonia, North Carolina, roughly half an hour west of the Queen City. His debut as a major leaguer came on Sept. 5, 1998, with the
Atlanta Braves
. Over the next eight seasons, Helms would play for the Braves (2000, 2001 and 2002) and three other National League clubs — the
Milwaukee Brewers
(2003, 2004 and 2005), Florida Marlins, now known as the
Miami Marlins
(2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011) and
Philadelphia Phillies
(2007). The 2020 campaign represents Helms’ first as Charlotte’s manager. His 75 career major league home runs include an inside-the-park homer on Oct. 7, 2001, against the Marlins.
The Knights posted a 75-64 record in the 2019 season, tying for second with the Durham Bulls in the
International League
South. However, Durham possessed the head-to-head tie breaker over Charlotte and claimed the International League wild-card spot.
Charlotte’s in-state Triple-A rivals, the
Durham Bulls
, reside less than 150 miles away. Along with the Bulls, the
Norfolk Tides
and
Gwinnett Stripers
vie with Charlotte for supremacy in the International League South. The
Toledo Mud Hens
, whose uniform was donned by the character Max Klinger in
M*A*S*H
, also compete in the International League.
Opened in 2014, BB&T Ballpark has 8,800 permanent seats and a maximum capacity of 10,000. In four of the ballpark's six seasons, the Knights have led
Minor League Baseball
teams in attendance. The Knights drew the sixth largest number of spectators across the minor leagues in 2019. Fans who visit BB&T Ballpark are treated to a backdrop of downtown Charlotte and some of the tallest buildings in the Carolinas.
On Aug. 1, 2004, Tetsu Yōfu recorded a nine-inning no-hitter for the Knights in a 5-0 win over the Durham Bulls. Yofu’s was the Knights’ first. Andre Rienzo had a seven-inning no-hitter on July 25, 2013, against the
Indianapolis Indians
. Lucas Giolito replicated the feat of Rienzo on May 25, 2017, in a 4-0 win over the Syracuse Chiefs (now the
Syracuse Mets
) at BB&T Ballpark. Carlos Torres has the Knights’ first perfect game, a rain-shorted five-inning affair on June 18, 2009 at the
Pawtucket Red Sox
.
