Located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, the Central Michigan football team derives its name from the nearby Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe with which it's associated. The football program has a long and rich history that dates back to 1896 as an independent school. In 1974, Central Michigan won its sole Division II national championship with a 54–14 route against the
University of Delaware
. Roy Kramer earned Coach of the Year honors for his exemplary leadership. The following year, Central Michigan transitioned to Division I football and joined the Mid-American Conference. College Football Hall of Fame coach Herb Deromedi took over and led the team to a school record 110 wins, including an undefeated season in 1979. Following a down period in the team's fortunes, future
Irish
head coach Brian Kelly revived the program. His final season in 2006 culminated in a conference title. In 2009, Central Michigan put together a 12-win season (tied for best in school history) and another conference title under Butch Jones. Fans of the Chippewas can purchase their tickets to the game at the StubHub website or by downloading the app.
Central Michigan plays at
Kelly/Shorts Stadium
, located on the school’s campus in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Opened in 1972, the stadium was originally named Perry Shorts Stadium in honor of a major donor and 1900 graduate. In 1983, the Board of Trustees changed the name to honor former head coach Kenneth Kelly, who led the team between 1951 and 1966. The stadium has a seating capacity of 30,255. General admission seating is available at the east end of the stadium. Student seating and the band section are found to the south. The reserved section and Chippewa Club seating are located to the north behind the team bench. Club seating includes chairback seats, VIP parking, a lounge area, private restrooms and exclusive concessions. Nine luxury suites are also available for purchase.
The Central Michigan marching band is integral to the football experience. Dubbed The Spirit of the Stadium, the band puts on a choreographed pregame and halftime show. During the game, the band cheers after every down and frequently plays a selection of songs, including the team’s fight songs, The Fighting Chippewa.
Tailgating is permitted in designated spots around the campus and the parking lots beginning four hours before the start of the game and continuing until kickoff. Fans are expected to follow the school’s tailgating policies. Alcohol containers, drinking games and animals, with the exception of service animals, are not permitted.
Central Michigan shares its most important rivalry with
Western Michigan University Broncos
. The two teams have played most years since they first met in 1907. The winner of the game receives the Victory Canon trophy. Central Michigan also shares a rivalry with the
Eastern Michigan University Eagles
. Like the Western Michigan rivalry, the teams have played on a near-annual basis since the first matchup in 1902.
