The Carolina Chocolate Drops have been captivating audiences since the early 2000s, and the number of CCD devotees continues to grow with each spectacular performance. The band sprung out of a mutual love for the banjo. Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Sule Greg Wilson found each other at the first Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, North Carolina. It didn't take long after their 2005 formation for the band to begin selling out shows. Old-time music fans couldn't seem to get enough of their one-of-a-kind style that included instrumentation from the banjo, harmonica, fiddle, guitar, snare drum, jug, bones and kazoo. The musicians pushed their unique vibe even further by regularly trading instruments, often in the middle of a set.
The band has released seven albums, but didn't gain national appeal until the release of their album, Genuine Negor Jig. The 2010 album earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards. The album was also named to FRoots Top 10 albums of 2010 list. Once the word was out about this ingenious band, there was no stopping the crazy train of success. They made appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, opened for Taj Mahal and Bob Dylan and even performed on the hallowed stage of the Grand Ole Opry. And with the addition of a beat boxer and another multi-instrumentalist in 2011, the band found an even bigger audience. One of their songs was even featured on the soundtrack for the blockbuster The Hunger Games. The band has continued to rack up awards and gain new fans with each new performance. The band's sound draws largely on the influence of African-American old-time fiddler Joe Thompson and the traditional folk music of the Piedmont region of South Carolina. But the band is a product of the 21st century, and they have been known to mix up their sets with old-time renditions of more modern songs like Blu Cantrell's R&B hit Hit 'em Up Style (Oops!).
