Cactus League Spring Training
The MLB became the first major professional sports league in the world in 1903 when the National League and American League baseball teams made a National Agreement to play together. Teams have been hitting the diamond and thrilling crowds ever since. Well into the 1960s, baseball held the top spot as the most popular sport in the U.S. By 1972 NFL football had encroached on that lead, but baseball will always hold a special place in America’s heart. Affectionately known as “America’s Favorite Pastime”, baseball is a widely accessible game as it requires minimal equipment to play. From the first wild swings of a tee-ball game, through backyard games, hometown leagues, semi-pro, and beyond, people just love baseball. The popularity of Major League Baseball continues to grow. Stats show that the average number of fans attending live games across the Majors during 2024 is up 0.9% over the 2023 season, which had recorded the largest attendance increase in 30 years! Other countries around the world that love Major League Baseball include Canada (the only country outside the U.S. with an MLB team), the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico, and South Korea. MLB television broadcasts capture amazingly detailed views of the action, but most baseball fans will agree that there is nothing like the energy and atmosphere of being at the ballpark to watch a live Major League game!
Major League Baseball starts each season with 2 months of Spring Training, which begins in early February and continues through to the start of the regular season. Opening Day is scheduled during the last week of March, or first week of April, each year.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is made up of 30 teams which are divided into 2 conferences. There are 15 teams in the National League Conference (NL), and 15 teams in the American League Conference (AL). These 2 conferences are further broken down into 3 divisions each, based on geographical location. They are the American League Central, American League East, and American League West, along with the National League Central, National League East, and National League West.
The Major League Baseball regular season begins the last week of March or first week of April immediately following Spring Training. Each individual team will play 162 games during the regular season, through to the playoffs in October. It’s a heavy schedule for the players with 10 days of game play followed by 1 day off, but fantastic for dedicated baseball fans who can watch a game almost every day. Games played during the regular season are a mix of divisional opponents, league opponents, and interleague matchups. The top 6 teams from the American League and the top 6 from the National League then compete in their Division Series playoffs for the title of League Champions. The two victorious League Champion teams then face off in the World Series best-of-seven playoffs, for the chance to bring home the ultimate victory and Commissioner's Trophy.
Prices vary quite widely across different teams, or ballparks, and during playoff matches. MLB single game tickets can run from $40 up to $260 for the big games. In one word... outstanding! Going to a baseball park to watch a live MLB game is a completely different experience than watching it on television. In baseball, the team movements that happen outside of the pitch and swing are also important and at the ballpark you get the full experience. It’s exciting to see the synchronicity of the team and the way the outfield works their strategy during every pitch, instead of viewing only one part of the game action at a time. At the baseball stadium you feel like you’re part of the game, cheering along with thousands of other fans, hearing how loud the crack of a bat really is, or strolling by the bullpen to watch pitchers warming up. It’s also fun to look for any small, repeated superstitious rituals among the players, meant to bring good luck. Watch for players tapping on their shoulders, hat, or shoes; kissing a necklace; drawing symbols in the air while in the batter's box, or how they handle the bat each time. The 7th inning stretch is a tradition as old as baseball itself. Each team puts their own unique stamp on this shared tradition, which brings spectators together and ramps up excitement for the innings ahead. Baseball games are generally cost-friendly for a family outing and many people have fond memories of attending ball games as a kid. On the right day you might even catch a game ball, or witness baseball history being made! Yes! Going to a World Series game is an electrifying, surreal experience for any baseball fan. The 2023 MLB Season saw the Texas Rangers defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks and bring home their first-ever World Series title win since their franchise began, in 1961. Rangers shortstop Corey Seager was named MVP, making him only the 4th MLB player to be named as World Series MVP twice (his first win was in 2020 with the Los Angeles Dodgers) and the only player to win the award while playing in both Leagues. The 2023 season also saw pitchers working to adjust their strategies against the implementation of the Pitch Clock countdown, which added an extra layer of intensity and reduced game times by an average of 24 minutes over last season. Stolen base success rates were up in 2023, recording the most bases successfully stolen during a season since 1987. And 2023 also marked a record-breaking overall attendance for the league at 70,747,365, a 9.6% uptick and the largest attendance increase in 30 years.
The New York Yankees eclipse all others when it comes to the most World Series wins in MLB history, earning 27 championship titles as of the start of the 2024 regular season. The St. Louis Cardinals take 2nd place with 11 World Series titles to their credit.
