The Bridgeport Sound Tigers hockey team is the official AHL affiliate of the
New York Islanders
. The team serves as a farm system for NHL prospects, developmental projects and minor league veterans. The franchise was originally founded in 2001 by the same ownership group of the New York Islanders. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers are the Islanders' second affiliation franchise, along with the
Worcester Railers
of the ECHL. In its first-ever year, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers ascended to the top of the East Division. After capturing the Eastern Conference crown, the team made it to the 2002 Calder Cup Finals, where they lost to the
Chicago Wolves
in five games. Bridgeport won the division again in 2012, and they have made the playoffs twice since then. The longest Bridgeport has ever gone without making the playoffs is three years in a row from 2012-2013 to 2014-2015. ''Jeremy Colliton is the team’s all-time leading scorer with 126 assists and 203 total points. His 77 goals are only eclipsed by Jeff Hamilton, who scored 89 during his time with the Sound Tigers. Other top scorers include Rob Collins, Steve Regier, Trevor Smith, Jeff Tambellini and Alan Quine. Goalie Rick DiPietro holds the record for most wins in a season with 30 while Wade Dubielewicz holds the single-season team and AHL record with a 1.38 goals-against average, in at least 25 games.'

Bridgeport’s main in-state rival is the
Hartford Wolf Pack
. Known as the Battle of Connecticut, the two teams play each other up to 12 times in the regular season. They have also met once in the playoffs, a 3-0 series win by the then Connecticut Whales in the first round of the 2012 postseason. The team’s two affiliate organizations, the
New York Rangers
and New York Islanders, are also rivals in the NHL.
''Bridgeport finished second in the Atlantic Division with a record of 43-24-6-3 and 95 points. However, in the first round of the playoffs, Bridgeport lost to the Hershey Bears, three games to two. The Sound Tigers won a hard-fought Game 1 by 3-2 in double overtime, but the Bears roared ahead by winning the next two games 2-0 and 2-1. Bridgeport emerged victorious 3-2 in overtime to tie the series in Game 4, but the Bears won in overtime in Game 5, 3-2, to clinch the series victory.'

Brent Thompson has been an integral part of the Islanders organization since June 28, 2011. He led the Sound Tigers to a division title in 2012 and then served as the assistant coach for the Islanders between 2012 and 2014. He returned to the Sound Tigers the following season, surpassing Jack Capuano as the team’s most successful coach, winning his 134th game on January 28, 2017. Before he was with the Islanders, Thompson served as the head coach of the
Alaska Aces
from the ECHL. He has won both the 2011 Kelly Cup and Coach of the Year honors.
