In 2016, Western Kentucky and Memphis played against each other for the first time since 1956. It was a tied series between the teams, but that didn't last long as Western Kentucky took the game 51–31. In 2017 the Florida Atlantic Owls made it to the Boca Raton Bowl, getting to play on its home turf. The team faced off against Akron and completely wiped the floor with them in a game that ended with a score of 50–3.'
