Born in 1976 in Durban, South Africa, Black Coffee began his DJ, singing, songwriting and producing career in 2005 with the release of his remix of Hugh Maskela's hit song Stimela. Before he embarked on his career, Black Coffee studied jazz at the Durban University of Technology. He also worked as a backup singer for various South African artists and eventually formed his own musical trio with two friends. Black Coffee's live shows are frenetic, fast paced and fun.
Black Coffee's first big break came from his participation in the Red Bull Music Academy. It served as a vehicle to introduce Black Coffee and his music to the world. In 2005, he released

, his debut album. The album was well received by both critics and fans. He has won multiple awards for his music and legendary live performances, including SAMA Awards for best male artist and best urban dance album. In 2015, he was named Breakthrough DJ of the Year at the DJ Awards in Ibiza. Unable to use his left arm, which was paralyzed in a car accident when he was a teenager, Black Coffee holds the Guinness World Record for the longest ever one-handed DJ set - 60 hours non-stop in 2010 in Soweto.

He combines all these in a digital format and uses them when he performs. He also utilizes turntables to give each song its own identity, one that can change with each performance. Black Coffee's equipment gives him the freedom to create and improvise in the middle of a performance.
