The Birmingham Bulls is a professional hockey team from the minor league SPHL — the only league that plays exclusively in the American South. Many of the players in the SPHL advance to play at higher levels of hockey. Founded in 2017, the team is named after the original Bulls, which played in the World Hockey Association and Central Hockey League between 1976 and 1981. For the first season in its current incarnation, Birmingham finished just behind Peoria for second in the league standings with 80 points and a 39-15-2 record. As the second seed in the playoffs, Birmingham defeated eighth-seed Fayetteville and fifth-seed Roanoke in three games each to reach the championship series against third-seed Huntsville. The team got off to a tough start with a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss. In the second game, Huntsville clinched its third championship in franchise history with a 4-2 win. Despite the disappointing finish, three Bulls received league-wide recognition for their incredible play. Mavric Parks received Goaltender of the Year, Josh Harris was the league MVP and Jamey Hicks was the Coach of the Year.
