The man who would become Big Smo would be born on February 14, 1975 as John Smith in sunny San Diego, California. This creative genius would eventually prove his chops as a film director, producer, songwriter, singer, and country rapper. Smith's family would move, and the young boy would grow up in the musical hotbed that is Tennessee. As the musician known as Big Smo, this artist expertly and innovatively combines hip-hop and rap style choices with the attitudes, themes, and sensibilities of country music. One reviewer has distilled Big Smo's essence as the hypothetical musical mating of Run-D.M.C. and Kid Rock, while another likens Big Smo's output to a combination of Nappy Roots and Hank Williams, Jr.
During his high school career, Smith would take part in the school's marching band. By the time he graduated, he would have learned to play a number of instruments with felicity, including the trumpet and the drums. During this time, Smith would also be an aspiring poet and would fortuitously strike up a creative relationship with Ray Riddle, who was just then beginning to explore mixing and would eventually become the master DJ known as Orig. But before that happened, Riddle and Smith would experiment by combining Riddle's samples on his Technics turntable with Smith's unique verses. This creative partnership would last a long time. Together, Smith and Riddle would learn the ins and outs of the music industry from the ground up. This self-education would involve the release of independent films, albums, and singles. The pair would get their first taste of success when one of their hick-hop tunes, Kickin' It in Tennessee, went viral with more than five million hits on YouTube. This sensational single would quickly come to the attention of Warner Music in Nashville. Smith would get his breakout deal with Warner Music, who would sign him as Big Smo. The major label would help Big Smo release his very first EP, Grass Roots, all across the nation in 2012. Big Smo would follow up this successful EP debut with another EP, Backwoods Whiskey, in 2013. Big Smo's official full-length studio album debut, Kuntry Livin', would come out with massive commercial success in 2014. That year, Big Smo would also find his way onto national television with a U.S. reality series called Big Smo, which would follow the hick-hopper in his daily life.
With the release of Big Smo's ground-breaking EP collection Grass Roots in 2012, the hick-hop scene had found a new luminary. This hard hitting album would make it into the Top 100 Country Albums chart. Following Grass Roots would be the even bigger EP, Backwoods Whiskey, the next year. This heady release would make it to an auspicious sixty-nine on the Country Albums chart that year and to number thirty-nine on the Top Heatseekers chart. Big Smo knew had he what it takes to make it big, and so in 2014 he would release his first studio-length album, Kuntry Livin'. This super smash hit album would hold its ground at number six on the Country Albums chart from 2014 and into the new year. Big Smo's big smokin' single from his official studio debut would be the rocking My Place, which would rise into the Top 50 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
John Smith has assumed a number of different monikers, depending on what medium he works in. Some of his other creative pseudonyms include Moss of the Stick, Andrew Mitchell Dick Keller, and Hick Ross.
