Ballet West was founded by William F. Christensen and Glenn Walker Wallace in 1963. Christensen, known also for co-founding the
San Francisco Ballet
with his brothers, became Ballet West’s first artistic director. Under his guidance, the company formed the distinctly American style it is known for today. Following in Christensen’s footsteps, Bruce Marks became artistic director in 1978 and added
Swan Lake
and
Abdallah
to the company’s repertoire. Marks’
Abdallah
became the first American full-length presentation of the ballet. Three more directors followed Marks: John Hart, Jonas Kåge and Adam Sklute. Sklute, the current director, preserves Ballet West’s classical legacy while expanding the company’s repertoire of productions. The company is also known for working with up-and-coming and renowned choreographers.
