About Ballet Preljocaj

Ballet Preljocaj founder Angelin Preljocaj was born in Paris, France, and he initially studied classical ballet. He was soon drawn to contemporary dance and studied with Karin Waehner. In 1980, he then moved to New York to work with Zena Rommett and Merce Cunningham, and returned to France to finish his studies. While in France again, his teachers included the American choreographer Viola Farber and French choreographer Quentin Rouillier. He later joined Dominique Bagouet before forming his own dance company.

In December of 1984, the Preljocaj company became the National Choreographic Centre of Champigny-sur-Marne and Val-de-Marne in 1989. In 1996, the ballet was then welcomed at the Cite de Livre in Aix-en-Provence and it was at that time when it officially became the Ballet Preljocaj. Founder Angelin Preljocaj has created 45 choreographic works and his internationally renowned dance company performs approximately 100 dates per year all over. In addition to his work with his own dance company, Angelin Preljocaj has also collaborated with a number of other artists, including Enki Bilal on Romeo et Juliette and Air for Near Life Experience. Many of his works have also been restaged by other repertory companies, including La Scala in Milan, the New York City Ballet, Staatsoper in Berlin, and the Paris Opera Berlin. Angelin Preljocaj also participates in community outreach, by lecturing on dance interpretation through video, having public rehearsals, contemporary dance classes and workshops, and dance interventions in urban public space. He does so to creating understandings of dance from different perspectives, and to share his passion for dance with a broader audience.

In 2006, the Ballet Preljocaj had their very own dance center created for them in Aix-en-Provence. Designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti, the Pavillon Noir is actually the first production center built specifically for dance, where artists are free to go through the entire creative process, from rehearsals to performance. The Pavillon Noir opened in October of 2006, with Angelin Preljocaj serving as artistic director.

The Ballet Preljocaj is now going on tour, bringing their unique style of dance to venues all across the world. One of their famous productions is their reinterpretation of the story of Snow White. In Angelin Preljocaj's imaginative new take on Snow White, the story is juxtaposed with the crude, sexual, and violent aspects of humanity without flinching. This adult fairy tale contains common imagery and dance styles that fans have come to know and love from the Ballet Preljocaj.
