The stadium, which was originally named Memphis Memorial Stadium, cost $3 million to construct when it was first built in 1965. The
Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium
received a $38 million makeover in 2013 that included new turf and lighting. Luxury boxes were updated, and the stadium now provides better access for handicapped fans. The seating capacity of the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is 58,318.
Several other events are available for the enjoyment of attendees to the Liberty Bowl. Chief among these events is a pre-game party and barbecue held at the Pig and Barbecue Lounge that is located adjacent to the stadium. The Liberty Bowl currently has a deal with the Big 12, which sends its 4th-place finisher to the game each year. The SEC sends the second team to compete in the Liberty Bowl from a pool of its members. There are several Liberty Bowl performances that will be talked about for as long as college football is played. Tony Eason completed 35 passes on 55 attempts for 423 yards in 1982. The numbers posted by Eason are records in all three categories. Bob Anderson holds the record for rushing with 254 yards in 1969. The most receiving yards posted in a game is 220 yards, a feat accomplished by Jameon Lewis in 2013.
